“Boys will be boys” is an idiom we have all heard far too often. Rooted in a toxic masculine ideal, it’s used as our culture’s justification for seemingly harmless to downright dreadful behavior. It’s a justification for an often overlooked systemic pattern of abuse. It’s a belief that belittles not only women and the LGBTQ community but also men, excuses structural violence, and ignores victims. We as artists, writers, and musicians are here to tell the stories of the good, the bad, and the ugly; to take a moment together to talk about experience and hope and think about how humanity can prevail in the face of discrimination and create a fairer world.
